After Rachael's piano lesson, we met up with Michelle & Dianna at McDonald's. It was great getting to see them since we don't get to hang around much anymore (now that they aren't in co-op and we are living so far away).
We also had our first US Geography class today. Nick even sat in on the class and was very well behaved. He didn't participate, of course, but he did sit quietly and draw while class was in session.
I was once again amazed at how much Rachael knew. I still can't get over how cool it is to be 100% in charge of your child's education, and yet still be astonished at things they've picked up along the way - with no help from you. I guess her affinity for the Weather Channel comes in handy after all!
They covered all of the major U.S. rivers, mountain ranges, and lakes today. In addition to that, they briefly discussed general world geography (continents, oceans, etc.) - which they had already studied two years ago in World Geography. Their homework assignment for next week covers the New England States.
We also found out that a friend of ours (who is also a staff person at our church) is strongly considering homeschooling her son. He's the same age as Rachael, and is incredibly gifted mathematically. Because he's so bright, he's constantly getting harassed at school for being a "nerd." This kid would benefit so much from homeschooling, but his dad is very hesitant - thinking that the boy should "suck it up" and "get over it." Of course, he could start goofing off and playing dumb to appease the other "macho" kids, but at what cost? Labels: co-op, Homeschool |
I wonder if this article would help that Dad at all. I am worried about our boys in this country. http://www.newsweek.com/id/157898/page/1
