Day 213 - DQ and Thrift stores...
Friday, August 01, 2008
Rachael received a letter in the mail that said to bring "hick" clothes for a night of "Redneck Fun" at camp. To her, that meant finding a straw hat. They had straw hats at Walmart, but there was no way I was buying a new hat for that reason. We ended up going to a couple of thrift stores where we found the hat pictured above. It wasn't exactly what she was looking for, but for $.25, it will have to do! We also went to DQ for lunch. YUM!!!!!!!
Jeff didn't get home last night until 10:30 - which was an hour earlier than expected. I hate this time of year. Not only is it hot, but due to the end of the fiscal year, he works 7 days a week, 12+ hours a day. On a positive note, Rachael had her Taekwon-do testing last night. She was promoted to 9th Gup and earned another stripe. Hooray!
Rachael had her 1st board breaking attempt today. She wasn't able to break it, but she gave it a stellar attempt. Man, those boards are a lot thicker than I thought they'd be!
Rachael had Taekwon-do this evening. She's getting much better and a lot more limber! I made a vegetable curry and fresh baked bread for supper. When we lived near an ethnic food store, I used to buy the pre-made curry sauce. Since there's nowhere around here like that, I had to improvise. I added chopped cauliflower, potatoes, and chickpeas to the crockpot. I poured in a can of tomato sauce, a ton of dried onions and chopped garlic, and several spoonfuls of turmeric, coriander, pepper, & curry powder. When Jeff got home, he added salt, sumac, and lemon juice. It wasn't as good as the pre-made stuff, but it was good. It had better be ... we have about 3 more meals worth in the fridge! ;-D
Rachael's Taekwon-do instructor was a little late today because of another program that ran over. Nick found some boxing gloves and started pounding away on the punching bags. Unfortunately, they "punched" back and he ended up on his face more than once! Another reason that I love Rachael's Taekwon-do is that the instructor, Mr. Nowling, allows Nick to participate in the stretching warm-ups. With Nick's cerebral palsy, stretching is of utmost importance for him. It's usually like pulling teeth to get him to stretch, but in class, he loves to participate!
Rachael tries out some of her newly learned self defense techniques on her dad. Most of her Taekwon-do class today revolved around different techniques you can use to escape a would-be captor...
Rachael had her first Taekwon-do class this evening. I think she was a little overwhelmed, but she had a great instructor who helped her out. She really enjoyed it and is looking forward to her next class on Thursday. Note: This is a borrowed uniform just to have her ID picture taken. Hers should arrive in a week or so...
